Traces: Australia House

Our design for the Australia House design competition in Japan traces the imprint of a building that previously inhabited the site.

A steel-framed off-form concrete pavilion addition grafted to the rear of an narrow 1890′s terrace house.

In this renovation a reworked roof form admits northern sun from above whilst retaining district views to the south.

This substantial renovation occured wholly within the form of the original house thus avoiding the need for a Development Application.

A four bedroom dual-occupancy development that dextrously negotiates an existing stand of eucalypts and steep site topography.

An over scaled mansard roof form wrapped and grafted on to a masonry base. We clearly express each ‘part’ in composition.

An attic conversion with a new open-tread stair that draws natural light deep into the heart of an existing Newtown terrace.

An existing corner shop and house are adapted and improved in direct response to their neighbourhood context.

This recycled workers cottage has an open-planned bathroom and continuous concrete floor – a seamless flow of space from front to back.
